Horseradish tree leaf is one of the healthiest herbs in the world and one that is attracting a lot of attention for its supposed miraculous benefits.
If the name doesn’t ring a bell, then you may know this plant by another name: Moringa. In this guide we’re going to look at its health benefits and nutritional makeup to show you just how healthy it really is, before hopefully educating you on the risks, side effects, dose, and the best way to consume it.
We use horseradish tree leaf as one of the 25 superfood ingredients in our daily detox formula. In creating this formula we spent months researching the healthiest herbs, the most synergistic plants, and the best tasting natural flavorings. We looked into hundreds of substances and dismissed many of them, leaving only the very best to be chosen for our formula. Horseradish tree leaf was one of the remaining superfoods, and in this blog you’ll learn just why we included it and just what it can do for your health.
Moringa, or Moringa Oleifera, to give it its full name, is a tree cultivated in South Asia for use in traditional medicine and as a food. It is a fast growing tree that has actually been classed as an invasive species, but growers are increasingly welcoming it due to the rising demand for its leaves.
These leaves (the most nutritious part of the plant) are harvested, dried, and then turned into a powder, which can be added to supplement powders (such as the organic variety in our Detox Organics) or tablets. The vast majority of moringa is produced in India and it has an extensive history in traditional Indian medicines.
Not only is horseradish tree leaf said to provide a number of health benefits (more on that below), but it is also a nutritionally sound plant, providing the consumer with a wealth of essential vitamins and minerals. 110 grams of the fresh leaf contain just 65 calories on average, yet they also provide the following of your daily values:
100 grams of the fresh leaf will also provide you with nearly 10 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, and just over 1 gram of fat.
With the exception of spirulina and chlorella, there are very few plant-based supplements that provide such a concentrated amount of vitamins and minerals, and those concatenations increase even further when the plant is dried. 100 grams of the fresh leaf will also provide you with nearly 10 grams of protein.
Moringa offers all of the following health benefits, even when consumed in relatively small doses:
As with every substance, it’s important to enjoy Horseradish Tree Leaf in moderation. Eating it to excess could cause a number of issues, from mild gastrointestinal discomfort, to symptoms related to toxicity.
One of the biggest issues facing moringa users today is the highly concentrated varieties being sold to them. It’s much easier for a supplement company to purchase a highly concentrated moringa extract than it is for them to sell the pure leaf. That way they can get more bang for their buck and pay less to import more, all while telling the customer that their product is superior and stronger than everything else.
But when some products benefit greatly from being turned into extracts and consumed in tablet form, moringa really isn’t one of them. It’s already a highly concentrated superfood when consumed in its natural form, and there are concerns that concentrated extracts can lead to kidney problems, infertility, and more.
This is not to say that there is something inherently poisonous within moringa itself, but that the body simply isn’t prepared to process such massive amounts over a prolonged period. These issues have been noted with other extracts as well, including green tea extract, which can lead to liver failure when consumed to excess.
So, to stay on the safe side, make sure you use a fresh, dried, or powdered moringa that has not been concentrated into an extract. Such is the case with the organic moringa powder that we use in Detox Organics.
This is clearly a food that you need in your diet. The best way to consume it is through the Detox Organics daily detox drink, which comes with a hearty helping of organic moringa in addition to 24 other health-boosting superfoods.
Variety is not only the spice of life, it’s essential for good health. Eating a single superfood every day won’t do much for your health, but combining many superfoods together and staying fit and healthy will. We created Detox Organics to help you do just that. It only takes one drink a day to meet your needs. We even made it taste like chocolate milk (using natural organic ingredients and no sugar) so you have no excuse not to drink it!
Moringa can also be purchased fresh and eaten like spinach. It actually cooks just as quickly and easily as spinach and it also taste the same, so it can be added to similar dishes or eaten as a side dish.
This is a great way to get more of those healthy antioxidants and to boost your nutrient profile, but don’t go overboard—moderation and variety is key.
