Your body often has to sort through the good and harmful parts of the food you eat.

You can give it a break from processed foods, excess sodium and sugar to help it operate at a higher level.

A good detox will help you feel better and get you on a healthier track with your eating.

WHAT DOES DETOX MEAN?

There isn’t a magic food that cleans your body of bad things.

Your body actually does it’s own detoxing, as your kidney, liver and colon operate.

But, toxins and harmful ingredients push their functions into overdrive.

So focusing on a diet without those unhealthy ingredients allows your digestive functions to get needed nutrients without having to sort through so much waste.

It doesn’t matter if you eat lots of salads or live on fast food and soda, your body is going to have to fight through bad ingredients unless you are really focused on keeping those toxins out of your diet.

It would be great to eat a Detox diet long term, but you can at least get started with a set number of days.

If you are used to eating a lot of junk food, you will probably need to give your body at least a week to get used to a diet without excess salt and sugar.

This detox list will taste great and provide your body with lots of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and protein.

You don’t need to punish yourself to get on a healthy path.

Find the nutritious foods you love to get into a long-term rhythm of eating well and enjoying your meals without a crash or sluggishness.

VEGAN DETOX MEAL IDEAS

When you are feeling low, sluggish, fuzzy brain or frustrated with your weight, a vegan detox can really help you pick up some steam.

You will find after a week, you are craving fewer unhealthy foods and finding that new energy level that is so invigorating.

An extra spring in your step isn’t something to take lightly and when you hit that point, you will wonder why you’ve been eating any other way for so long.

BERRY GREEN SMOOTHIE

Greens are always a great thing to sneak into your smoothies and spinach is one of our favorites.

This smoothie will give you the vitamin boost you need while tasting delicious.

Grapefruit juice will support your liver in cleaning toxins from your body.

Strawberries and raspberries also help flush toxins from your body and add a rich sweetness without a lot of sugar.

You can freeze your own berries on a cookie sheet for a few hours, or you can buy frozen berries.

  • 1 grapefruit, squeezed for juice and chilled
  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 cup frozen raspberries
  • Ice or water if needed

Make sure you strain your grapefruit juice for seeds (pulp is fine).

Blend all ingredients in your blender until smooth.

Use water, if you need to thin it down or ice if it is a bit on the runny side.

Serve cold.

GREEN JUICE MACHINE

This is probably more like the kind of detox recipe you are expecting, but you don’t have to drink this if it sounds like a punishment.

The green smoothie is filled with ingredients that are perfect for starting your day.

This is a great time to sneak in the kale and some people like the taste.

You may want to half this recipe the first time, just to see how you feel about it before making a whole glass.

  • 2 cups Frozen greens (Swiss chard, kale or spinach)
  • 2 celery stalks
  • Juice of ½ lemon or lime
  • 2 tsp. fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 banana, sliced and frozen (optional if you don’t need the added sweetness)
  • Almond milk to thin if needed

Blend all ingredients well until smooth.

You can use unsweetened almond milk if it seems a bit thick.

Drink while cold.

ROASTED VEGGIES

One of the hardest parts of a detox is feeling hungry.

Your body may not be lacking the nutrition, carbs and proteins it needs, but it is missing out on the sugars and salts it got accustomed to.

You can help curb your feelings of hunger with warm, robustly flavored grilled vegetables.

Roasting (instead of steaming) will bring out deeper flavors in your vegetables for a more flavorful meal.

Some of the best vegetables for grilling or roasting include:

  • Cauliflower
  • Mushrooms
  • Asparagus
  • Bell peppers
  • Summer squash
  • Eggplant

With any of these ingredients, cut them into large parts (like ½ slices of the cauliflower head or half of a bell pepper) and toss them in olive oil.

Add a little salt, along with a good amount of pepper, garlic powder and red pepper or paprika to taste. You can get more adventurous with the seasonings if you want, but make sure you are adding spices to enhance the vegetable flavor.

Most vegetables will only need roasted a few minutes per side.

You can set your oven to 450° and put the veggies on a tray covered in parchment paper, flipping after about 5-7 minutes.

Or, you can roast them right on the grill.
